BUILDING DATA DRIVEN CITIES
Improving cities’ ability to better serve their residents
The more cities can make evidence-based decisions, the better they can improve the lives of their residents through more effective and efficient services. That’s why building data-driven cities is the core of what we strive to do.

A STORY ABOUT DATA
Not so long ago, when I was working at a mid-sized local government, I began noticing opportunities where using data could make what we were doing smarter.
Why didn’t we keep better track of the information on development happening in the community? Why didn’t our maintenance crews have a mobile app to easily see previous records? Couldn’t we analyze the many requests coming through our front desk to deliver better service?
The answers were all variations on a theme: “we don’t have the resources to take that on,” “we don’t have anyone who can do that,” or the most frustrating: “we’ve always done it this way.”
The fact is that the world is changing, and local government needs to change with it. Answers like: “we’ve always done it this way” don’t cut it anymore. For the truly innovative local government, resource constraints are an opportunity to get creative rather than an excuse for inaction.
That’s why I started CitySmarts. A lot of cities are beginning to understand the importance of data as a core organizational strength, and I want to be there to help them along.
After all, even for the most forward-thinking governments, there’s often a big need for some extra knowledge, creativity, and expertise on the journey.
Local governments are too important to be left behind as the world innovates. If you’re among those that share the belief that “we’ve always done it this way” is unacceptable, let’s have a chat.
It’s what we’re here for.
